What is Maintenance of Certification (MOC)?

Emerging Challenges of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) ABMS & ABIM deadlines are fast approaching!

Physicians are increasingly called upon to demonstrate lifelong commitment to learning, quality improvement, professional development, and excellence in patient safety, communication, and overall care. Whether through Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) incentive programs, evolving standards in CME design, analysis, and outcomes evaluation, or newly entering mandates in board certification and state licensure.

Medical board certification has undergone a major shift, now stretching well beyond 'once and done,' 'certified for life' single examination models. Embodied in the contemporary 3 to 10-year cycle of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is increased focus and attention to quality in health care through demonstration of a commitment to lifelong learning by regular participation in practically applicable CME activities, evaluation of knowledge and evidence-based practice assessment and improvement. In general, the MOC process cycle begins immediately after a physician receives board certification and also includes two-to three-year checkpoints for CME credit analysis (to avoid 'CME loading' near the end of the 10-year MOC cycle). There are four main areas, or 'Parts,' for completion required, as described below.

General MOC Requirements

Part I - Evidence of Professional Standing

Proof of full and unrestricted licensure and professional practice

Part II - Lifelong Learning & Self-Assessment

A specified number of earned CME credits throughout the 10-year MOC cycle, with a specific amount of these derived from formal Self-Assessment Modules.

Part III - Cognitive Expertise

Satisfactorily completing a secure examination

Part IV - Evaluation of Performance in Practice
