Welcome to a course in cultural competence for health professionals who are dealing with the needs of older adults.

The purpose of this series of learning modules is to provide you with clinical skills to help you provide better care. In the long run, it’s meant to reduce the severe health and health care disparities that persist between racial and ethnic groups in the U.S, particularly in geriatric care.

In the Introduction we provide data, historical examples, and a theory as tools for understanding discrimination and miscommunication. In Unit 1, we offer a clinical approach for understanding patients’ explanatory models of disease and wellness. In later units, we will address setting the stage for respectful care, developing health care partnerships, taking histories, conducting physical exams, negotiating treatment, and following through with care. The Introduction takes approximately 40 minutes, Unit 1: Explanatory Models is approximately 15 minutes.
